Twilight Director Says Jenna Ortega and Jacob Elordi Would Be ‘Perfect’ in a Reboot

Catherine Hardwicke says Jenna Ortega and Jacob Elordi would make the “perfect” Bella Swan and Edward Cullen!

The Twilight the director, 68, celebrated the 15th anniversary of the supernatural teenage romance with a “watch” of Josh Horowitz’s 2008 film. Happy Sad Confused podcast, during which she approved the host’s suggestions for an updated Bella and Edward.

Horowitz asked Hardwicke who she thought should portray the couple — originally portrayed by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson — in the reboot. “Is Jacob Elordi Edward Cullen today?” he asked. “Is Jenna Ortega . . .”

“Oh yeah, that would be perfect,” the director replied, before asking the host if he had seen Elordi’s latest film, Saltburn.

“I mean, he’s amazing,” she said of the Australian actor, 26. “He’d probably be Edward today. Exactly.”

Hardwicke also approved Horowitz’s suggestions for Bella.

When asked who she would choose to step into Stewart’s shoes, she said, “I mean, of course, you just mentioned Jenna Ortega,” adding that the 21-year-old Wednesday star is “amazing”.

The director of the 2008 film also discussed the future of the franchise — which is based on Stephenie Meyer’s fantasy novels of the same name — given the news that Twilight the series is reportedly being produced by Lionsgate TV, Diversity reported in April.

Hardwicke, who directed the first of the five-part saga, said she didn’t “actually know exactly” what the new adaptation would look like.

“I do not know yet. They may not even know,” she told Horowitz, noting that the writers’ strike likely delayed the series’ development.

The Thirteen the director said that she would like to take the beloved saga in a completely different direction.

“It would be fun for me to do that Twilight in space,” she revealed. “I would be more than happy to do that, something completely different.”

Elsewhere in the podcast episode, Hardwicke revealed that she recently had a surprise Twilight reunion on Pattinson’s 37th birthday earlier this year. The director told host Horowitz that she and Stewart, 33, all “knocked down” the original Edward’s party.

“Surprisingly, I finished… I recently went to Rob’s birthday,” she said. “I had a bit of a crash with my friend Toni Collette, who was just filming a movie with him.”

She continued: “We were having a party and then Kristen collapsed too. That was just a few months ago, and it was like, ‘Oh my God!’ We all hugged — like, this is so crazy and cool.”

Hardwicke also revealed that Stewart was shocked to see her there.

“When Kristen walked into Rob’s birthday party, she said, ‘Catherine? Rob’s birthday? What is happening?’ I say, “I had a little meltdown with Tony.” And she says: ‘Well, I knocked him down too.’ ”

According to the director, Stewart – who dated Pattinson during their four-year stint as Bella and Edward – “rang the doorbell” to see if it was “cool” for her to come, and “of course” Pattinson welcomed her.

“He is such a wonderful person,” she added Batman star.
