In 1987, at the age of 18, this cowboy turned professional. He managed to become a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). He was named PRCA Rookie of the Year in 1988 after winning $45,977 in three events: bull riding, bareback riding and saddle riding. Murray completed the PRCA circuit after another year. He and his uncle, Mr. Butch Myers, were the only two cowboys to qualify for one or more events. In 1989, he and his uncle held a friendly competition in which Uncle Myers led him for $2,786 in the finals.
He won $58,031 and beat Myers by $21,202. In 1989, he was the youngest winner in the all-around. At the age of 23, he became the youngest millionaire in rodeo history. In 1919, he also won the PBR Bud Light Cup World Championship in Las Vegas. He earned $265,000, the most ever won at a PBR event. Murray has been crowned world champion nine times and is known as the “King of the Cowboys”.
