Tyler Perry reveals why she played Kerry Washington Scandal‘s Olivia Pope with such ease and how he saw that quality in her daughter Isabelle Amarachi.
Perry, 55, attended the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in Washington on Monday, December 2, where he spoke about some of the “personal things” he’s noticed during his friendship with the actress, including her ability to approach her life on and off screen him with “love” and “attention”.
The actor recalled the time he and his family went on vacation with Washington, 47, and her loved ones while she was filming Scandal and pregnant with her daughter.

“So when she was going back to the room, the baby was walking in front of us because she was in a diaper,” Perry explained, referring to her 10-year-old daughter Isabelle, who she shares with husband Nnamdi Asomugha.
“And I look at her, and I’m like, I said, ‘Kerry, she walks like Olivia Pope,'” Perry said of Washington’s daughter, who played the character her mother played for seven seasons from 2012 to 2018.

“She has the whole walk down to the room. She embodies that. She embodies that, and I think she’s passed that on to the baby,” he continued.
The speech ended by praising Washington’s character.
“With that being said, as I think about the life she’s lived as an activist, as a woman, as a person, as a person of color, the character she’s put on display for all to see, I’m so incredibly proud of her,” Perry said.

In addition to Isabella, Washington is mom to 8-year-old son Caleb Kelechi and Asomugha’s teenage daughter from a previous relationship.
In June, Washington opened up to PEOPLE about keeping her children out of the spotlight, saying that she and her husband were “really protective of our partnership and our relationship, because we wanted her to belong to us, and we found that we could define and create a relationship for themselves and with each other out of the public eye.”

“And I think in many ways we just want to give our kids the same opportunity to define life for themselves and to enter the public space in their own way,” she added.
Perry instructed Washington For colored girls (2010), Peeples (2013) and the upcoming Netflix movie Six Triple Eight. The new movie will be released on the streamer on December 20.
