Tyne Daly Is ‘on the Mend’ to a ‘Full Recovery’ After Hospitalization, Says Doubt Director (Exclusive)

After canceling her Broadway play due to hospitalization, Tyne Daly is expected to make a full recovery, according to the play’s director.

The 77-year-old stage and film legend was set to lead a revival of John Patrick Shanley’s award-winning play Doubt: a parable as Sister Aloysius, alongside actors Liev Schreiber, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan.

On February 6, PEOPLE confirmed that an undisclosed health-related issue had caused it Cagney and Lacey the star will be hospitalized on February 2.

“On behalf of the cast and crew Doubtand the entire Roundabout family, we are thrilled that Tyne is on the mend and on the road to a full recovery,” the show’s director, Scott Ellis, told PEOPLE on Friday.

Isabel Keating stepped into the role of Sister Aloysius after the first preview of Roundabout Theater Company’s production, scheduled for that day, was cancelled.

Daly “put on her dress for the invitation [rehearsal] performance and then was hospitalized,” an industry insider confirmed to PEOPLE on Thursday. “But she’ll be fine.”

According to a previous statement from the company, Daly was “unexpectedly hospitalized … and unfortunately must withdraw from the production while receiving medical care.”

Amy Ryan stepped into the role of Sister Aloysius last Tuesday for the duration of the series.

Doubt would add Daly’s seven Broadway credits, stretching back to 1967 That summer – that fall. Her New York theater work includes the 1989 production of Gypsy, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Her six-time Emmy-winning television work includes Cagney and Lacey, Christy and Judging Amy. She recently appeared on the screen in 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming and hosted on Grey’s Anatomy, Madam Secretary and Mom.

“With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a speedy recovery,” Ellis, who is also Roundabout’s artistic director, said earlier in a statement. “We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a short minute – to join our company and take on the role.” The statement continued: “We are deeply appreciative of Isabel Keating, who stepped in brilliantly on rehearsal day and allowed us to get the production off its feet during this first week of performances.”

Revival Doubt will have an official opening on March 7 at Broadway’s Todd Haimes Theatre.

Doubt originally made his Broadway debut in 2005 playing Tony Award winner Cherry Jones as Sister Aloysius. The 2008 Oscar-nominated film adaptation starred Meryl Streep in the role, alongside Viola Davis, Amy Adams and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
