U20 Pan-Am Wrestling Championship 2023 results
The 2023 U20 Pan-Am Wrestling Championships were held in Santiago, Chile from July 6-8. The tournament featured some of the most talented wrestlers from Team USA in this age division. Here are the results for Team USA and the event schedule:
Team USA results in men’s Greco-Roman:

- 53 kg: Alexandra Szkotnicki won the GOLD medal. She beat Emily Dos Santos (BRA), Shamilka Miranda (PUR), Andrea Avelino (MEX) and Ivy Threatful (CAN).

History of Pan-Am Wrestling
Since its inception, sambo has been an integral part of the Pan American Championships, initially competing alongside the Olympic styles of wrestling. Over the years, national teams, including the US team, have been a combination of seasoned sambo athletes and seasoned international wrestlers who have chosen to compete in this unique discipline.
However, from the 1980s to the 2000s, there was a period of separation, resulting in the temporary exclusion of Sambo from the Pan American Championship. Until 2006 when FILA (now United World Wrestling) regained control of sambo, with the goal of including the Pan American Sambo Championships as part of the 2006 Pan American Wrestling Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Unfortunately, the hosts in Brazil faced challenges that prevented the sambo event from being included in the competition. In response, USA Wrestling stepped up and agreed to host the Pan American Sambo Championships alongside its US Sambo National Championships, ensuring the sport continues to thrive and gain recognition in the Pan American region.
In 2013, there was a significant development when Olympic styles and sambo were competed separately in Panama City, Panama. This decision followed the introduction of combat sambo into the program of the Pan American Sambo Championships. Although Combat Sambo is not strictly categorized as a wrestling style, it has found its place within the Pan American Sambo Championships.
Today, the Pan American Sambo Championships is a separate event from the Pan American Wrestling Championships. Both competitions play a key role in promoting and improving the sport of sambo, offering athletes a platform to showcase their skills and participate in exciting competition within the Pan American region.
