UGC issues guidelines for students

ODL, Enrollment in Online Courses: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced precautions for students enrolling in online or open distance learning (ODL) programs offered by colleges and universities. These guidelines include, among other things, checking recognition status and avoiding prohibited programs.

The commission reported that in 2020 it established regulations for these programs, prescribing minimum standard requirements for the award of undergraduate and graduate degrees in online and ODL modes.

While explaining the details, the UGC said that in a meeting held on July 25 this year, it decided that the last date for admission to online and ODL programs for the July-August academic session is September 30, 2023.

The UGC has stated in an official notification that, “Students must confirm the higher education recognition status for ODL and online education, for the session selected for admission on the UGC DEB website, check the details on the website of the higher education institution, take note of the prohibited programs and the prohibition of franchise arrangement and ensure that all activities are within Territorial jurisdiction for ODL programs.”

List of programs prohibited in ODL and online mode

Candidates must ensure that the minimum duration, nomenclature and initial qualification for the ODL programs and online programs for which admission is sought are strictly as per the UGC Notification of Degree Specification and its amendments.

Also, Yoga and Tourism and Hospitality Management programs at UG and PG levels are not allowed in online mode, while MPhil and PhD programs are not allowed in both modes. The Commission further informed that it is prohibited to offer the following programs in ODL and online mode:

  • Engineering
  • Medical
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Pharmacy
  • him
  • Dental
  • Architecture
  • Law
  • Agriculture
  • Horticulture
  • Hotel management
  • Hospitality technology
  • Culinary Sciences
  • Aircraft maintenance
  • Visual arts and sports
  • Aviation
