UK’s tallest rollercoaster breaks down leaving thrill-seekers stranded at 236ft for an hour

The UK’s tallest rollercoaster at a major theme park has broken down days after reopening.

The Hyperia in Thorpe Park, Surrey, ground to a halt on Saturday leaving riders stranded for an hour at one of the highest points.

Thrill seekers were left stranded at a height of 236 feet while they waited for the ride to be repaired.

Hyperia only opened in May and since then has suffered a series of breakdowns.

After only one day of operation on May 24, it was forced to close for two weeks.

The ride reopened on Wednesday before shutting down on Saturday.

Theme park giant Thorpe Park said riders were “notified throughout” the closure and that these types of delays were “perfectly normal”.

A spokesman said: “Hyperia has had a short operational delay today.

“Guests were kept on the cable car hill for approximately one hour before the ride was restarted and the train returned to the running station.

“Downtime is perfectly normal and common at theme parks everywhere.

“At no stage were there any concerns for the safety of the guests.”
