AT LEAST a dozen homes were evacuated after a cleaner found suspected “radioactive” waste piled up in bin bags near a school.

Emergency crews, including police, were called to the scene at 7pm following the incident less than 100 meters from the primary school.
A private cleaning company was hired to empty the semi-detached council house in Bentworth Road on Thursday afternoon.
Two workers took bags of trash to scrap dealers where they scanned it and told them it was “radioactive.”
The police were then called before specialist officers flooded the street.
About a dozen homes were evacuated, and the rest were warned not to go outside until it was safe.
‘WAREHOUSES’
One of the cleaners, named George, told Metro: “There’s so much stuff in there. Every room is full of stuff – they haven’t thrown anything away in years.
“I took a load of garbage bags and trash to the top and when they scanned it they said they couldn’t leave it here because it was radioactive.
“I don’t even remember what was in them, there was so much rubbish. I didn’t know what to do, but I had to go back to the house.”
George added that he believed the woman who lived there was in her 90s when she died, while a male tenant is now in the home.
One neighbor described how he came home from work last night and had to sit outside while the street was blocked off.
He said the couple who lived in the house were “serious hoarders”.
A Met Police spokesman said: “We were called after a person found an item they believed contained a harmful/chemical substance – it was checked and found to be safe.
“No further action.”
