He was on a diving trip with six friends around the island of Pulau Reong when tragedy struck on September 26.

She and the desperate group were dragged away by the strong current, and the guide was unable to pull her back to the ship.

Rescue teams searched for eight days before finally giving up on October 3 due to dangerous sea conditions and little chance of finding the tourist.

Unfortunately, a fisherman in the neighboring country of East Timor found human remains inside a shark on Sunday.

Liquisa County officials said the woman’s body was still wearing a black diving suit and appeared to belong to a Western woman.

The fisherman said: “The shark was caught but it was not in normal health. I thought it had swallowed plastic or fishing net.

“It was cut open to find the problem, and inside were the remains of a woman.”

Officials in East Timor are contacting the coast guard in Indonesia.

They also appealed for details of anyone whose friends or relatives have gone missing due to the popularity of diving on the nearby islands, which are Indonesian territory.

Muhammad Saleh Goro, head of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) for the management of Alor Islands Marine Park and the surrounding ocean, said: “We have coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Dili, and KBRI has confirmed the truth of this information.

“The body of a woman was found in a shark in East Timor. It was not in the territory of Indonesia.

“We are now investigating the case further to confirm if these are the remains of someone who has been reported missing in Indonesia.

“According to the diving suit worn by the victim, it is suspected that he is a diver. The results of the investigation will be published after more complete information is available.

“Anecdotal reports from East Timor suggest the shark victim was a foreigner.”

Ipda Giovani BM Toffy, police chief in southwestern Maluku where the tourist first disappeared, said a tour guide with a diving group initially reported her missing.

He said: “The initial search was undertaken by the victim’s friends as they were on the same trip to the Banda Islands.

“We have coordinated with the Nabar village government to mobilize residents to help search the coast towards Reong Island and conduct searches around the waters of Reong Island using long boats or speedboats, but no victim has been found.”
