Usher is still in the game and seems to have turned back the clock.
The R&B superstar, 46, just returned to Las Vegas, where he teamed up with model and friend Liberty Ross to open Flipper’s World Roller Boogie Palace, the first-of-its-kind full-service roller rink residence at The Venetian Hotel.
The star, known for skating everywhere from the Super Bowl halftime stage to the current leg of the Past, Present, Future Tour, has now successfully helped bring his favorite pastime to the Vegas Strip for an extended stay this winter, and he couldn’t be happier.

“This is kind of a victory lap for Las Vegas,” he tells PEOPLE at Flipper’s grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 16. “It really all started with my residency and we had another residency and we played the Super Bowl. We went to Paris with this tour, I’m in the flow, enjoying myself and doing things that I really love.”

When it comes to the secret behind his youthful good looks, physique and energetic spirit, “skating has always kept me young,” reveals the star, “and it’s something I feel is a necessity for young people these days. Everyone spends so much time moving rollget out, get active, come and have a good time.”
As for new skaters, Usher wants them to hit the rink, too. “There is no judgment here,” he says. “You fall, you get up. We invite the whole family to come.”

Having been skating since childhood, the star has a deeper connection to the activity. “It’s a form of self-care,” Usher says. “Freedom and expression, I really feel like that’s the language when you get deeper into the cultures of skating for rhythm, period. And people need to understand how much fun this really is.”

Usher hopes he can convince some of his superstar friends to tie the knot soon. “It would be crazy if Dre, Snoop and Pharrell came out here,” he says. “NWA came about through skaters, a lot of those early hip hop bands could only get a place to perform at rinks. I still remember performing at rinks as a kid. It was always the foundation of the culture.”

And Usher says you’re more likely to find him on the ice rink than in the kitchen this holiday season. “I wouldn’t count on me for your Thanksgiving dinner,” he says with a smile. “No, no. Maybe I could make mac and cheese and some banana pudding, but that’s about it.”
