Valerie Bertinelli Appears in Her Last Episode of Kids Baking Championship After Exiting the Show

It’s time for Valerie Bertinelli Children’s baking championship the end has come.

On Monday night, the Food Network aired the final episode of season 12, in which youth baker Lila Smethurst was named the winner of the competition. The finale, taped in the summer of 2022, was Bertinella’s last episode since she revealed in January that she would not be returning to the series in future seasons. The former host of the cooking show has been in the series since its beginning in 2015.

In celebration of the finale, Bertinelli’s co-host, Duff Goldman, shared two images from the Spirit and Science Day-themed episode. “Watch the kids make tie dye donuts, then get ready for a science fair!” he wrote on Instagram. “Lots of color and eruption in tonight’s episode.”

Goldman’s followers were quick to point out that this would be his last time with Bertinelli and wished her luck.

– It won’t be the same without Valerie! one person commented. “I love you and her together. It just won’t be the same. You two have natural chemistry as a hassle/sister and wonderful interaction with the kids.”

Other fans also chimed in with their disappointment at Bertinelli’s departure. “I have to agree with so many comments about this being the last time with Duff and Valerie as judges,” a fan commented in part. “Their chemistry is genuine and they both have a special way of supporting children without coddling them.”

A source close to the production previously told PEOPLE that Bertinelli’s return was “absolutely discussed” after her contract expired. However, the star’s team “decided they wanted more and talks stalled”.

Another source said: “Her deal fell through, and [Food Network] decided not to renew. They didn’t make a new offer, but Valerie was very keen to continue.”

Bertinelli used her post at the time to share some advice for future contestants on the show.

“You’re here for a reason. You’re some of the best bakers in America right now,” she said. “And if you don’t make it to the next round, always remember this: It’s not because you’re not a good baker, you just had a bad day. So always, always believe in yourself. Please do it for me. And keep baking. I’ll miss you People.”

Bertinelli’s show Valerie’s Home Cooking was canceled in 2023.
