Varun Malhotra’s hometown is New Delhi, and he received his education in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh. Varun graduated in engineering and then pursued his MBA in Accounting and Finance from IIM Ahmedabad in 2008. In 2008, he moved to the United States to pursue his MBA at Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, as part of a student exchange program. He then took the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam in 2011 and completed the course in 2013.

After completing his postgraduate studies, Varun founded his own company, Edge Institute for Financial Studies Pvt. Ltd., in Noida, Uttar Pradesh in 2009. According to him, he started the company with the intention of spreading financial awareness and changing the investment culture in India. He has worked as a financial advisor to leading companies such as Indian Oil Corporation and Bank of America. He even conducted financial savings workshops for Border Force soldiers. In an interview, he said,
We consider index funds as the first choice for soldiers to start SIP as it does not involve any constant monitoring and does not require expert help to select the fund. Index fund managers simply reflect the weightings of the index constituents.”
