The Madrid Open’s decision to prevent players from speaking after the women’s doubles final in order to silence them has been dubbed “unacceptable” by Victoria Azarenka.

After defeating Sloane Stephens in the second round of the Italian Open on Thursday, Azarenka told the Guardian, “What happened in terms of doubles was completely unacceptable.”

The tournament’s chief executive, Gerard Tsobanian, issued an apology after receiving public rebuke from American partners Gauff and Pegula. But he hasn’t explained why he made the choice.

“It was wrong to deny our women’s doubles champions the opportunity to thank their supporters after the match, and we have apologised to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco, and Jessica in person.
We are devoted to always improve our procedure, so we are reviewing our protocols both internally and with the WTA. We erred, and we’ll never make the same error again.
Azarenka emphasised that she did not want her statements to be interpreted as criticism of the many uninvolved people connected with the tournament. IMG, the proprietors of the Madrid Open, is Azarenka’s agent. The 33-year-old also admitted that she did not get a direct apology from the organisers.
