Victoria Azarenka News

The Madrid Open’s decision to prevent players from speaking after the women’s doubles final in order to silence them has been dubbed “unacceptable” by Victoria Azarenka.

The incident is related to the uproar over what happened in the Spanish city on Sunday, and it has prompted the tournament’s organisers to publicly apologise to the players involved.

After defeating Sloane Stephens in the second round of the Italian Open on Thursday, Azarenka told the Guardian, “What happened in terms of doubles was completely unacceptable.”

Many people think that the Madrid Open officials were worried that a player, namely Victoria Azarenka, would use their remarks following the doubles final to condemn the competition.

“There are certainly many internal discussions about what happened, and I want to see how they progress and what the outcomes of those choices are.

“Therefore, I don’t want to comment too much. I think it’s important to allow individuals the chance to decide for themselves what the best course of action is. Do I consider it to be unacceptable? This is totally inappropriate.

Final speeches are usually always given by the champions and finalists of the tournament. The champions and finalists in Madrid, Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia, as well as Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, were astonished to learn that they would not be permitted to address the audience.

The tournament’s chief executive, Gerard Tsobanian, issued an apology after receiving public rebuke from American partners Gauff and Pegula. But he hasn’t explained why he made the choice.

Tsobanian posted on Twitter, “We deeply sorry to all the players and fans who expect more from the Mutua Madrid Open competition.

“It was wrong to deny our women’s doubles champions the opportunity to thank their supporters after the match, and we have apologised to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco, and Jessica in person.

We are devoted to always improve our procedure, so we are reviewing our protocols both internally and with the WTA. We erred, and we’ll never make the same error again.

Azarenka emphasised that she did not want her statements to be interpreted as criticism of the many uninvolved people connected with the tournament. IMG, the proprietors of the Madrid Open, is Azarenka’s agent. The 33-year-old also admitted that she did not get a direct apology from the organisers.
