Victoria Monét McCants is an American singer and songwriter born on May 1, 1989. She started performing arts at an early age, participating in the city’s dance team and singing in the youth choir at her church. She soon began writing and collaborating with producer Rodney Jerkins. Monét, formerly signed to Atlantic Records, released her first EP, Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1, in 2014 and her second EP, Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 2, in 2015. In February and September 2018, Monét would release EP’s Life After Love, Pt. 1 and Life after Love, Pt. 2. EP Jaguar was released in August 2020. Her first album, Jaguar II, was released on August 25, 2023.
Career of Victoria Monet
Monét discovered a new love when she began exchanging poetry with her older cousin outside of dance rehearsals. As a result, she immediately started writing her own songs. During that time, she learned about producers, researched the production industry, and made music at a nearby recording studio. She decided to add Rodney Jerkins (aka Darkchild) to her Myspace after learning about him. Soon after, he invited her to visit Los Angeles to audition for Purple Reign, a brand new girl group he was starting. A year later, the group signed a record deal with Motown, but it was canceled before any music could be heard. After the trio broke up, Monét turned to songwriting as a means of support while she waited for her own musical career to develop.
The song on Diddy’s 2010 album Dirty Money Last Train to Paris was the first song she ever wrote. Before sending demos, she was constantly making up songs and singing them herself. She hoped the record companies would approve of her performance enough to keep her on the song as a feature.
