Victory Boyd Wikipedia, Age, Singer, Age, Album, Family – Victory is the best illustration of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s axiom that “life is a journey, not a destination.” The 28-year-old, devout singer has scaled mountains that few in the business could ever think of doing since the publication of her major label debut album, The Broken Instrument, in 2018. However, she claims that the lessons she learnt along the way will always overshadow her triumphs when reflecting back.

In the 18 songs on her upcoming sophomore LP, Glory Hour, which is due out in less than 24 hours, she shows just how effective her new creative method is. Victory used this unique technique, which has been dubbed “freedom writing,” to write each song for the album. But you don’t need a pen, paper, or even the beginnings of a musical idea to achieve it.

Victory explains to American Songwriter that “freedom writing” is when she simply sits down at the piano or guitar and lets her spirit soar. “I don’t have any preconceived ideas about how I should sound. Whatever is expressed sometimes lacks logic, other times is just a tune, and other times is a sigh.

Working with Kanye West on his 2019 studio album, JESUS IS KING, the first full-length release in his discography that expressly presents non-secular, Christian music, gave me the idea for freedom writing. Victory, who has songwriting credits on four of the album’s 11 tracks—”Water,” “Closed on Sunday,” “God Is,” and “Hands On”—explains that she benefited equally from West’s unconventional approach to music-making as he did from her compositional assistance.

He simply helped bring together smart people who are all on the same wavelength and have the same spirit, according to her. He didn’t need to have all the ideas. “He released the raw material, and it needed to be free of brain interference. After that, you enter with your mental faculties and consider what makes for a better fit, better flow, and what the plot is.

Victory was never in awe when West acknowledged and praised her work as a member of the JIK team, though. Since she is already a contracted singer to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, she doesn’t experience any situations that surprise her or boost her ego.

“When Jay-Z or Kanye validates my penmanship, they are more so just coming along to agree with what I already know,” she claims. “But they don’t tell me like it’s a revelation like I don’t already know that I’m great,” the speaker objected.

Victory eventually received a Grammy honour for her work on JESUS IS KING, which won the Best Contemporary Christian Music Album prize in 2021. She was already working diligently on Glory Hour at this point; the book’s title refers to the hour each day when she would write freely.

Victory was raised in Detroit, but when she was a teenager, she and her family relocated to New York so they could focus on their music. At first, they would set up in busy NYC locations like Central Park or the Metropolitan Museum of Art and perform gospel music for passersby. These IRL singing sessions would eventually result in studio recordings, earning CD sales and tips every day.

The band Infinity Song, which consists of Victory and her siblings Abraham, Angel, Israel, and MoMo, released Mad Love in 2020 and its follow-up, Deluxe, in 2021. Victory used to spend her mornings alone in her studio while she was still a New York resident, where there were two enormous windows that looked out at the city’s skyline.

“That was the appointed time for the darkness to be swallowed up in the glory of the Sun,” she claims. “It occurred at the scheduled time every day without fail.”

Victory would either play a guitar or sit at her baby grand piano to write “Glory Hour,” allowing the freedom of the daybreak to inspire her. She often referred to this place as her “secret place,” a term she adopted from Psalms 91:1-16, which states that “He who dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
