India’s Pearl Harbor moment
During the 1971 India-Pakistan war, on the evening of December 8, Pakistan sent eight squadrons of Saber fighter jets and dropped more than 14 napalm bombs on Bhuj, destroying the Indian Air Force airport. Due to the ongoing war, the air base had to be put into use, so the airport was in need of repairs. But time is tight and there is a shortage of workers for the runway repair work. Vijay Kumar Karnik (then Squadron Leader) was in charge of the Bhuj airport and decided to rebuild the airport with the help of local people. He convinced around 300 women from Madhapar in Bhuj to help the Indian Army. Karnik, along with two senior officers from the 50th Corps of the Indian Air Force and the 60th Corps of the Defense Forces, ensured that the airstrip remained operational after the explosion. Thanks to the collective efforts of Kanik and 300 rural women, the airport returned to normal in just 72 hours.
