Vikram Kirloskar

Vikram Kirloskar (1958-2022) was an Indian industrialist and the Vice Chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a joint venture between the Indian conglomerate Kirloskar Group and Toyota Motor Corporation, which manufactures and sells Toyota vehicles in India. A pioneer in the Indian automobile industry, he played a key role in bringing Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation to India in 1997. He is also the Chairman and Managing Director of Kirloskar Systems. He died of cardiac arrest on November 29, 2022.

Vikram Shreekant Kirloskar was born in 1958 (died 64 years old) from Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He studied at Lawrence School in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. He studied for a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at his grandfather’s alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. Thereafter, he received training while working in various capacities in India and the United States.

Vikram Kirloskar is a fourth generation member of the Kirloskar Group, founded in 1888 by Laxmanrao Kirloskar. The company manufactured India’s first iron plow in 1888. Since then, members of the Kirloskar family have contributed to India’s growth and industrialization.

Parents and siblings

His father Shreekant Kirloskar is also an industrialist and a third generation member of the Kirloskar Group. He is an only son.

His wife, Geetanjali Kirloskar, is an advertising professional who served as president of her own company, Quadrant Communications. She also established the insurance services arm of Kirloskar Systems. She is the former President of Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore. The hospital opened in 2013 in partnership with Toyota Tsusho, the trading arm of Toyota Group, and Secom Medical System, the medical arm of Japanese security company Secom. This is the first hospital in India to be jointly run by a Japanese and Indian company.

Relationships/Affairs

Before getting married, Vikram and Geetanjali dated for some time after meeting at a party. At the time, Geetanjali was 18 and studying at the University of Pune, while Vikram was 24 and had just returned to India from MIT. Recalling their first meeting, she said:

A mutual friend threw a party. He invited both of us and our families asked his parents to introduce us to each other. Vikram is from MIT; sober, smart, and six years older. I was impressed by his charming style. “

After the party, Vikram offered to take Geetanjali home and she agreed, but he took her back to his home. Talking about the same in an interview she said,

Vikram took me to his house; his parents were asleep. The next morning they were surprised that I showed up at their house and wanted to know if he had proposed. But let’s take our time. What finally worked was that I wanted to study and work after marriage, and Vikram wanted the same from his partner. “

Vikram Kirloskar belongs to the Karhade Brahmin family of Maharashtra under Laxmanrao Kirloskar, whose father Kashnath Pan Kashinathpanth is a Vedant-Pandit devotee.

Profession

He began his career in 1981 working in the manufacturing and automotive industries. After college, he started working in the family business, starting in production engineering. He is an intern in the manufacturing unit of Kirloskar Cummins in Pune. Early in his career he designed and developed many process and machine tools. While serving on the Government’s Machine Tool Development Committee in the late 1980s, he played an important role in establishing capital equipment import licenses. In 1997, the Kirloskar Group established Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) as a joint venture with Toyota Motor Corporation, with Vikram Kirloskar serving as vice chairman. The joint venture is headquartered in Bidadi, Karnataka, near Bengaluru. In addition to this, he also serves as Vice Chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Company. Other private limited companies in the Kirloskar Group of which Vikram Kirloskar is a director include Kirloskar Pneumatic, Denso Kirloskar Industries, Kirloskar Toyota Textile Machinery and Kirloskar Oil Engines. He has also served as a director of Kirloskar Proprietary Limited, Vikramgeet Investments And Holdings Pvt. Ltd., Global Alliance for Innovation and Technology, Quadrant Communications Limited, Asara Sales And Investment Pvt. Ltd. Ltd., Vsk Holdings Pte Ltd. Ltd. and CSEP Research Foundation. He also served as a director of Toyota Material Handling and Industrial Engines Pte Ltd.

Vikram Kirloskar passed away due to cardiac arrest on November 29, 2022. Toyota Kirloska announced his death, saying:

It is with great sadness that we inform that Mr. Vikram S. Kirloskar, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar passed away on November 29, 2022. We ask that you all pray for the rest of his soul at this sad time. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. “
