News about Vincent Jeanbrun
During the ongoing riots in France in 2023, a horrifying event occurred when terrorists attempted to burn down the house of the mayor of a Paris suburb overnight and fired rockets at the fleeing wife and children of the official. The act, which is being investigated as an assassination attempt, shocked the public and drew criticism from French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.
The attack in L’Ha-les-Roses, south of Paris, was not witnessed by the attacked mayor, Vincent Jeanbrun. However, the attack also injured one of his children and left his wife, Melanie Nowak, with a broken leg. The identity of the attacker is not yet known.
According to the BBC story, Jeanbrun claimed that the attackers used a car to drive through the gate of his house before setting the car on fire with the intention of spreading the flames to the house. A volley of pyrotechnic rockets was fired at Nowak as he tried to escape with his five and seven-year-old children. Mayor Jeanbrun described the terrifying incident as “an assassination attempt of unspeakable cowardice.”
French authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, which took place at 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.
When 17-year-old Nahel M was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop, violent protests erupted across France for the seventh night in a row. This provoked an attack on the residence of Mayor Jeanbrun. A total of 45,000 police officers were dispatched to keep the peace during the protests as tensions rose. Compared to other days, Saturday night was reportedly quieter, with fewer arrests overall, according to the Home Office.
Authorities confirmed that rebels set more than 800 fires overnight and that more than 700 people were arrested across the country in connection with the unrest.
Prior to the incident, Mayor Jeanbrun called on the French government to declare a state of emergency in response to the unrest. However, President Emmanuel Macron has yet to implement such steps. Later, the president will meet with senior officials to discuss the growing problem.
Concerns about the increased level of violence and its effects on public safety have been heightened in light of the attack on the mayor’s residence and the injuries suffered by his wife and son. In a show of support for Mayor Jeanbrun, Prime Minister Borne called the act “unacceptable”, echoing the views of other leaders from different political parties.
