UPSC Preparation
To prepare for the UPSC exam, Vishakha quit her high-paying job in 2017. For nearly three years, she stayed away from social media, including WhatsApp, to focus on her studies. After studying at a coaching centre for nearly a year, she immersed herself in reading books all day long in the nearby library. According to Vishakha, to de-stress, she would draw, paint, and solve a lot of Sudoku puzzles; besides, she would watch TV serials, interesting documentaries, interviews, and TED talks to relax herself. In the first two attempts, Vishakha did not even make it through the preliminary exam. Talking about this and the support her mother provided during her UPSC preparations, Vishakha said,
When I failed in my first attempt, it was a huge setback. Three years of preparation and taking exams, knowing that you might not pass at all, requires a lot of mental and emotional support. My mom was always there to pull me out of every dark moment. She would take care of my food, clothes and everything. The only thing I could do was study. ”
According to Vishakha, when she wanted to give up, her mother would say:
I’ll sit with you while you study, and nothing will happen to you.”
Vishakha Yadav finally cleared the UPSC exam in her third attempt in 2019 and secured sixth rank. According to Vishakha, she started preparing for her fourth attempt soon after her interview in the third attempt as she was not sure if she would make it. Talking about this in an interview, she said:
My interview was on March 18th, but as usual, I wasn’t sure if I would make it. So I started preparing for my fourth try.”
Detailing her preparations, she said,
In my previous attempts, I couldn’t maintain consistency. If you have set daily goals, then you shouldn’t miss them and put them off to another day. You should complete them. Stick to the schedule. If you try to break it, then it piles up and you fall behind schedule. This time, I made sure to set daily, weekly, and monthly goals, and I would complete them and revise them. I kept track of my progress.”
