WAEC Overview

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is a legally established examination board responsible for organizing examinations deemed necessary for the public interest in English-speaking West African countries. Its main functions include conducting these examinations and issuing certificates that are recognized internationally, similar to those offered by other examining authorities.

Established in 1952, WAEC has played a crucial role in the educational systems of Anglophone West African nations, namely Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia. It has successfully coordinated numerous examinations and issued certificates over the years. Additionally, the council has established an endowment fund, which supports education in the region through lectures and financial aid for those who cannot afford schooling.

One of WAEC’s strengths lies in its well-trained and highly motivated staff, as highlighted by Dr. Adeyegbe, the former Head of National Office of WAEC Nigeria in 2004. The council takes pride in conducting valid and relevant examinations that align with the educational aspirations of member countries. Each year, the council witnesses an impressive registration of over three million candidates for the examinations it administers.

As a result of its continuous efforts and widespread recognition, WAEC remains one of the most prominent and respected examination bodies in West Africa.
