The video of Crowthorne Christian Academy shows EFF members picketed outside the school under police guard after the school removed a schoolgirl wearing dreadlocks. Reportedly, the schoolgirl was forcefully removed from the academy for just wearing dreadlocks. Reports have suggested that sporting dreadlocks were against the hair policy of the school. Therefore, the girl was removed from the school forcefully. But Crowthorne Christian Academy ended up closing indefinitely. Now reports have come to the fore with claims that Crowthorne Christian Academy was not registered with GDE (Gauteng Department of Education). Steve Mabona who is a spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education said the girl who was removed for sporting dreadlocks is 13 years old and she had been offered alternate school and counsel while GDE was “assisting the school to comply and encourage all unregistered institutions to engage with the department for assistance with registration processes”. On Thursday morning, the calls to the school were not answered.
The parents of the students have been informed they will get a detailed explanation soon after EFF supporters descended on the school. Phillip Daniel who is the provincial deputy chairperson of EFF’s Gauteng said they would not tolerate any unfair policies especially ones stinking of racism following the forceful removal of a schoolgirl for wearing dreadlocks. On social media, the school shared its code of conduct on hair states, “All children’s hair must be clean and neat. Only natural hair is allowed. Only plain haircuts are permitted. No fashion clippings or shaves are allowed. No hair extensions are permitted.” Stay tuned.
