Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara’s red carpet outings may be rare — but they’re always sweet!
The pair stepped out at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ Fourth Annual Academy of Motion Pictures Gala on Oct. 19, and not only did the A-list couple look absolutely dashing in their designer pieces, but they also shared a loving moment on the carpet that left fans in swoon.
As Mara, 39, posed for photos in her sheer vintage 1996 Givenchy couture gown, Phoenix, 49, couldn’t help but do everything he could to ensure she looked her best – so he stepped in to disperse her tow and lay it perfectly behind her.

Variety captured the moment on the red carpet on video. As Phoenix crouches down behind Mara to fix her train, she continues to pose before laughing and gently shooing him away to pose for his own photos.
Of course, photographers captured the moment as well, and the two look more than happy to be together on the red carpet, sharing this rare moment of outdoor love for the cameras.

The couple’s appearance at the star-studded event comes after Mara supported her fiance at the film’s Los Angeles premiere in late September Joker: Folie á Deuxalthough the two were not photographed together on the red carpet. The two walked the carpet separately at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theater – Mara wore an all-black dress to the premiere, while Phoenix was seen in a black suit and white shirt as he posed for photos with Lady Gaga, his co-star in the film.

All about Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara’s Son River
Phoenix and Mara, who rarely appear together in public, first met on the set of their 2013 film. hera film in which they portrayed former spouses. Phoenix famously said Vanity Fair 2019 that at first he thought Mara didn’t like him, before he realized she was just shy.
The pair worked together again in 2018 films Don’t worry, he won’t get far on foot and Mary Magdalene and made their first public appearance as a couple at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival in May 2017.
The couple shares two children, a son Rivero, who they had in 2020 and named after Phoenix’s brother who died in 1993, and a second child, whose birth they did not announce.
