Wendy Rieger’s career
News No. 1 in Washington at 5 o’clock was hosted by Rieger on NBC4. Rieger joined News4 in 1988 as a general assignment reporter, primarily covering breaking news for News4 at 11 p.m.
Before beginning her television career, Rieger was a rising radio star thanks to her voice and writing style. After a brief stint as a writer at WAMU, the NPR station in Washington, he hosted the station’s morning edition for a time. He later/she worked as a news anchor for WTOP Radio and NPR. Her television career began at CNN’s Washington correspondent.
In addition to presenting, Rieger has a reputation for being a good reporter. For many years, NBC stations across the country featured his Going Green articles during their newscasts, leading to a series on NBC Nightly News.
The inspiration for this weekly series comes from Rieger’s 2005 short story about a woman who developed an allergy to her own home and the eco-friendly methods she discovered to manage its side effects. In April 2008, Rieger received one of Washington Magazine’s first Readers’ Green Awards in recognition of her work to “preserve our environment through education.”
Rieger won three Emmy Awards, including one for a special story he shot on home video in Vietnam 20 years after the war. He is active in the community through various local groups, including those that fight cancer, protect animals, and promote human rights. In terms of education, Rieger earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from American University.
Death of Wendy Rieger
In October 2020, Rieger underwent major heart surgery to replace a damaged mitral valve. April 2021 marked the beginning of his illness. One month after being diagnosed with glioblastoma, she passed away on April 16, 2022.
