Doctors quickly rushed to the field, and Fabianski received help for seven minutes.
His worried teammates stood around him and his opposite number Aaron Ramsdale came from his goal to check on him.
Fabianski was covered in a blanket and placed in a neck brace as he left the field on a stretcher.
West Ham and Saints fans applauded him as he was carried down the tunnel.
Alphonse Areola entered instead of the 40-year-old Polish national team member.
Worried fans shared their concerns online, with one saying: “I hope Fabianski is ok. It looked nasty.”
Another wrote: “I wish Fab a speedy recovery.”
A third wrote: “Respect for Ramsdale checking Fabianski.”
Amazon Prime TV cameras did not show any replays of the incident and filmed as the goalkeeper lay injured.
Fabianski played a brilliant game at the time of his horrific injury and made three saves, including a sensational header from Paul Onuachu.
It was the second substitution West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui was forced to make in the first half as Maximilian Kilman realized the problem and came on for Jean-Clair Todibo.
The Hammers went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jarrod Bowen.
After the game, Lopetegui gave an update on Fabianski, saying: “We were very worried about him.
“He had a strong blow around his head and neck. He wasn’t very sure of his actions.
“Fortunately, he is conscious in the dressing room. I talked to him.
“The doctors say he is feeling better so I am positive about him.
“He showed that he has more or less regained consciousness.
“We were afraid, but now he is better.”
