The main characters:
- Naruto Uzumaki. The title character and protagonist of the series, Naruto, begins as a young orphan and ninja in training. Despite his enthusiasm and happy, easy-going personality, he is sometimes shunned by the village of Konoha because he hosts Kuramu, the Nine-Tails Fox—though he eventually wins them over.
- Sakura Haruno. A member of Team 7, Sakura is a kunoichi; he has superior strength and can unleash a powerful blow against his enemies. She is also a healer, able to heal the wounds of her allies. She is known for her intelligence, courage and talent.
- Sasuke Uchiha. Also a member of Team 7 (though he later leaves the village to join Orochimaru), Sasuke begins as Naruto’s rival, challenging him and forcing them both to prove themselves. Sasuke is relatively cold and reserved, harboring a hatred for his brother, Itachi – though he cares more and more for his teammates.
- Kakashi Hatake. Kakashi is the leader of Team 7 and serves as a mentor to Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Despite experiencing many trials and tribulations in his early years, Kakashi does not let this affect his teaching, and guards Team 7 with his characteristic wit and patience.
Secondary characters:
- Hinata Hyuga. Hinata Hyuga is a member of Team 8. Initially characterized by her shyness and lack of confidence, Hinata’s training centers around her desire to prove herself to her family—while growing more powerful (and confident) over time.
- Kiba Inuzuka. Another member of Team 8, Kiba proves to be brash and impulsive as he trains to become a ninja alongside his canine companion, Akamaru.
- Akamaru. Akamaru is Kiba’s ninja dog (and best friend). The two work together in battle, with Akamaru using his sense of smell and hearing to complement Kiba’s skills.
- Shino Aburame. Shino is a member of Team 8 who can control bugs and use them to absorb the chakra of enemies. Some think he’s a bit creepy because of his ruthless attitude on the battlefield, although he cares for his teammates at heart.
- Kurenai Yuhi. Kurenai is the leader of Team 8, and is particularly skilled at creating illusions involving plants. Throughout the series, he acts as a surrogate parent to Hinata, helping her to grow stronger.
- Shikamaru Nara. Shikamaru is a member of Team 10, with a laid back approach to life that belies his extreme intelligence. He is also Naruto’s close friend and has always seen Naruto as a person, even when he was shunned by others in the village due to his connection to the Nine Tails.
- Ino Yamanaka. Ino is another member of Team 10 and one of Sakura’s childhood friends (although they temporarily clashed over their shared crush on Sasuke). She is fashionable, popular and talented, learning both medical ninjutsu and mind altering skills in battle.
- Rock Lee. Rock Lee is a member of Team Guy. Despite being completely incapable of using ninjutsu or genjutsu, he dedicates himself to becoming a skilled and respected ninja using only taijutsu.
- Could Guy. Might Guy is the leader of Team Guy. He is a close mentor to Rock Lee and has a casual, self-proclaimed rivalry with Kakashi (whom he enjoys competing with).
- Don’t eat Hyuga. Neji is a member of Team Guy and Hinata’s cousin. Although initially cruel to her and skeptical of Naruto, defeat by Naruto makes Neji question his ideals and begin to appreciate his comrades again.
- Tenten. Tenten is a member of Team Guy. It specializes in weapons of all kinds, from projectiles and explosives to melee weapons.
Minor characters:
- Minato Namikaze. Although his role in the series is relatively small, Minato is still a beloved character. Minato was killed when his son, Naruto, was a baby – but left behind a legacy of duty and loyalty.
- Kushina Uzumaki. Kushina is Naruto’s mother—and, like Minato, she died when Naruto was still a baby. However, she was still able to help and guide Naruto through the remnants of her chakra.
- Jiraiya. Jiraiya graduated from Konoha’s Ninja Academy and later became Naruto’s mentor. He became surprisingly close to Naruto, even acting as a surrogate parent—even though he’s also a very talented (albeit disrespectful) ninja.
- Tsunade. Tsunade also graduated from Ninja Academy with Jiraiya. He has an impressive reputation as the strongest kunoichi in the world and the greatest medical nin.
- Gaara made of sand. Although he starts out as a villain, Gaara eventually changes his ways after Naruto defeats him. Since then he is wiser, more empathetic and considers Naruto his closest friend.
