What happened to Billy Milligan?

Billy Milligan died of cancer on December 12, 2014 in Ohio. Billy Milligan, 22, was taken into custody in 1977 after being accused of kidnapping, stealing and sexually assaulting three women near the Ohio State campus. He was imprisoned for his crimes and was given public defenders to handle his court proceedings.

However, using a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, Milligan made a startling discovery. He claimed that he had not committed any of the aforementioned crimes. Instead, he stated that Ragen was the one who stole the money and Adalana was the one who added the sexual assault.

As the process continued, he discovered the existence of eight more distinct identities within Milligan’s psyche. After a thorough consideration of the evidence and psychiatric findings, on December 4, 1978, Billy Milligan was found not guilty by reason of insanity on all nine criminal charges against him. This ruling acknowledged that Milligan’s mental state, characterized by the presence of multiple personalities, contributed to his actions, thereby exonerating him from legal blame.

Milligan was the first defendant to be found not guilty of multiple personality disorder. According to his doctors, the cause of his disorder was childhood abuse by his stepfather, Chalmer Milligan. Billy splits into 10 and later 24 separate personalities who have little knowledge of each other’s actions. Chalmer Milligan died in 1988 at the age of 61. He has always denied the accusations against him.
