As a five-year-old, he even took on the task of herding goats. However, his childhood coincided with the Homeland War, which escalated in 1991 and forced his family to flee the area.
Tragically, Luka’s grandfather, also named Luka, was executed in December 1991 by Serbian rebels who were part of a police force affiliated with a self-proclaimed entity called SAO Krajina. The execution was carried out near the grandfather’s house in Modrići. Subsequently, after Luka’s family escaped, their house was deliberately burned down.
Due to the events of the war and the displacement he caused, Luka and his family fled and temporarily took refuge in the Kolovare hotel for seven years. Later they moved to the Iž hotel, both located in Zadar. In the meantime, Luka’s father joined the Croatian army as an aircraft mechanic. The city of Zadar experienced numerous bombings in those years, and football became an escape for Luka and a means to cope with the harsh reality of war.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Luka’s passion for football thrived. He started playing sports mostly in the hotel parking lot. In 1992, he entered elementary school and a sports academy at the same time. The family managed to pay for his enrollment with the little money they had, and sometimes Luka’s uncle helped them.
As a boy, Luka drew inspiration from footballers Zvonimir Boban and Francesco Totti. The game of football not only gave him comfort in difficult times, but also shaped him as an individual. Luka describes that period as difficult for his family, but he points out that the war did not significantly affect him because he became friends with many other children, and his parents made sure that their childhood remained intact.
