Tamim Iqbal, the famous Bangladeshi cricketer, has taken a surprising decision to retire from international cricket, creating a significant development ahead of the upcoming World Cup in India.
What happened to Tamim Iqbal?
In a surprising turn of events, Tamim Iqbal, the famous Bangladeshi cricketer, has announced his retirement from international cricket, just three months before the start of the World Cup in India. The decision came shortly after reports emerged of a rift between Tamim and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Nazmul Hassan, as well as coach Chandik Hathurusingh, over Tamim’s desire to play despite not being fully fit.
Tamim made the announcement at a surprise press conference held at 1:30 pm at Tower Inn Hotel, Chattogram. He informed the journalists about the press conference by text message on Wednesday at midnight, while he announced the change of venue in the morning. Originally scheduled for 12:00 p.m., the press conference was later postponed to 1:30 p.m.
During an emotional conference call, Tamim stated, “Yesterday’s ODI against Afghanistan was my last international match. I am retiring from international cricket with immediate effect. It is not a sudden decision. I have been thinking about it for some time and I have discussed it with my family.”

Why did Tamim Iqbal retire?
After much deliberation, Tamim Iqbal has taken the decision to retire from international cricket, citing a long-standing problem as a contributing factor. Expressing his thoughts during a press conference, Tamim stated that he had been thinking about it for a long time and had spoken to his family.
Overcome with emotion, Tamim declared that the recent game against Afghanistan marked his last appearance in international cricket, a moment he openly shared with reporters, leading to live coverage on national television. Tamim, a skilled batsman at the age of 34, leaves behind an impressive legacy with his significant contribution to the game.
During his illustrious 16-year career, he amassed an incredible 8313 runs in 241 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Bangladesh. This achievement includes an impressive tally of 14 centuries, the highest scoring statistic by a Bangladeshi batsman.
Tamim One handed punch
In a remarkable display of determination and courage, Tamim Iqbal showed his resilience in the match during the Asia Cup. Despite being informed by doctors that his tournament was over due to a fractured left wrist, Tamim surprised everyone by walking out to bat with only one hand after the fall of the ninth wicket.
Tamim joined forces with centurion Mushfiqur Rahim and together they added a crucial 32 runs for the last wicket, taking Bangladesh’s total to 261. To accommodate his injury, Tamim had his left arm braced and had a special pad supported with four fingers sticking out of his left glove. Although he faced just one ball after his return, his presence gave Bangladesh the final push they needed, thanks to Mushfiqur’s incredible attack in the last three overs.
However, Tamim’s injury would require him to be sidelined for at least six weeks. The injury occurred when he was hit on the left wrist while trying to take a shot against Suranga Lakmal. Immediately signaling the physio, Tamim retired injured after scoring just 2 runs off 3 balls. After an examination at the hospital, it was discovered that he had suffered a crack on the outside of his index finger.
Tamim’s decision to return to bat, defying expectations, showed his commitment to the team’s cause despite the significant pain he was experiencing. His injury added to Bangladesh’s woes as they had already lost Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan for ducks in the first over of the match against Lasith Malinga.
It was obvious that Tamim’s injury was serious as the team took him to the hospital for evaluation. We took him to the hospital only because it was a serious injury and not just a bruise, explained Minajul Abedin, Bangladesh’s head coach.
