The autumn season not only brings shorter days and spices everything up with pumpkin; it also marks the beginning of Libra season.
Libra is one of the twelve signs of the zodiac, an ancient system based on the position of the sun in the sky on one’s date of birth.
“Libra season marks the beginning of fall, as it begins on the same day as the autumnal equinox,” Lisa Stardust, astrologer and three-time bestselling author, tells PEOPLE. “Libra is ruled by the planet Venus and is symbolized by the scales of justice. This explains their fun-loving nature and why they value the civility of society — as well as law and order.”
In the horoscope calendar, Libra comes after Virgo and before Scorpio, and out of the four elements (earth, fire, water and air) it is classified as an air sign.
“Air signs are breezy and always have ideas in their heads,” says Stardust. “They are always on the move from one project to another, communicating their ideas and visions.”
From personality traits to compatibility, here’s everything you need to know about the Libra zodiac sign.

Stardust describes Libra with words like “charming,” “romantic,” and “artistic.” They are said to be one of the more sociable signs, she says, and are known for their “fashion and style flair.”
Libras also strive for balance and fairness, Stardust says — hence the scale of justice is their official symbol.
“The fact that they are ruled by Venus makes Libra a social sign that expresses itself through words and art,” explains the astrologer. “Since they are represented by the scales of Justice, they love harmony and peace at all times. They are an air sign that calms things down and helps others think rationally. Their gregarious nature encourages them to focus on relationships and be friendly with those who are different from them to keep the scales balanced.”
Stardust adds that Libras often lead “fun lives full of intellectual and artistic pursuits,” but their energetic natures can make them unreliable at times.
Libras also have a heightened sense of empathy, which can sometimes backfire, says New York-based astrologer Rebecca Gordon.
“They’re also extremely aware of how everyone else in the room is,” she tells PEOPLE. “This trait gives them great insight and empathy, although they can also tend to put themselves last because of this acute awareness.”

Because they share traits like sociability and good communicators, other air signs (Gemini and Aquarius) tend to be the most compatible with Libras, says Stardust.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), she says, have a different relationship with Libra.
“Specifically, Libra offers them a diplomatic approach to evaluate their passions from a rational perspective,” says Stardust. “One of the fire signs, Aries, opposes Libra in the sky. Although they use different energies, Libra can offer support and guidance. In turn, Aries pushes Libra to light a fire under their bellies.”

According to Stardust, compatibility doesn’t just depend on your sign, but your birth chart as a whole. A natal chart uses your date of birth, time and location to map not only the position of the sun at the time you were born, but also all the planets in the sky.
However, the astrologer indicates the typical characteristics of certain signs that may not agree with Libra.
“Earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn have a harder time understanding Libra because an air sign can be mischievous, while an earth sign is grounded,” she says. “Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) are emotional and intuitive, while Libra is direct and methodical.”
How does Libra season affect Libras?
Libra season marks a “solar return” for those under the star sign, says Stardust.
“We look at their birth date to see what astrological transits will affect their energy in the coming year,” she explains. “This year there is a major solar eclipse in the sign of Libra on October 14, which will be super intense for them. This will mark a time of change and growth, which can be difficult for anyone (not just a Libra!).”
While there can be challenges, Gordon adds that this is the time of year when Libras truly thrive.
“Libras will always be at their best when it’s Libra season,” says the astrologer. As for the upcoming eclipse, she says, “Eclipses accelerate evolution and help shake us out of any rut.”

There are many famous Libras, but one of the most famous is Kim Kardashian, who Stardust says leads a life very much in sync with her sign.
“She is a master of balancing work and private life,” he explains. “She’s also very relationship-oriented, even with her sisters and friends, and she’s good at maintaining them.”
Cardi B is also a Libra and shared her thoughts on her sign as well as other zodiac signs. In a TikTok posted in September 2022, the rapper explained each sign’s personality, and when it comes to Libras, she said they “won’t handcuff you.”
She continued: “The thing with a Libra is if they don’t have a life together and a business together, you’re not going to like them because they put their work and their dreams before you. It’s not you, it’s them,” adding, “They may love you to death, but they feel like you’re not worth having.”
Other famous Libras include Bella Hadid, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Serena Williams, Doja Cat, Donald Glover, Will Smith, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kate Winslet, Usher, Naomi Osaka, Jenna Ortega, Snoop Dogg, Anthony Mackie and Halsey.
