What is the Social Media Chrome Challenge?
However, the Chroming challenge is not a completely new trend, having emerged a few years ago. But it still makes headlines, obviously not for good reasons. The Strait Times reported that two teenagers who took part in the trend lost their lives in 2019. Another death occurred this year due to the Chroming Challenge. Supposedly, a girl from Australia passed away while she supposedly chromed herself. See the next section to read about the incident.
The Australian girl who died of Chroming was known as Esra Haynes. She was only 13 years old when she died. Google Trends shows that searches for the Chroming Challenge increased in May following the death of Esra Haynes. Esra Haynes reportedly died on May 14 when she allegedly chromed herself. Furthermore, the parents of Esra Haynes have also volunteered to save other children from this deadly trend. Her new motive in her life is to avoid further loss of life due to this trend. For this reason, the parents of Esra Haynes urge parents to be aware of their children and prevent them from committing such foolishness. Scroll down the page for more information.

dr. March Siegel appeared in America’s Newsroom where he said, “You’re literally inhaling paints and solvents to get high…the problem is you’ve got acetone in there, formaldehyde in there. They’re called volatile organic compounds for a reason: it irritates your skin, it can get on your lungs, you can have seizures, you can have a coma, and again, occasionally we see people die from it.”

The chrome challenge seems to be a variation on the old trend of blowing or sniffing different materials. In this trend, a person has to inhale anything such as spray cans, metallic paints, solvents, and gas. As mentioned above, in 2019 two children lost their lives attempting this challenge. dr. Siegel expressed his stress, saying: “The biggest problem is long-term cognitive problems that actually cause concentration problems if you use it over time. A really dangerous idea to inhale active organic compounds.” Go to the next section and read more details.

The National Retail Association has provided a definition to help you understand what chrome is. It has a broader definition, but the term “chroming” comes from the act of inhaling chrome-based paint or deodorant as a puff. dr. Siegel blamed TikTok for the trend’s loss of life because it allows the trend to grow. He said that’s one of the problems he has with social media platforms and the influence they have. Furthermore, the RCH (Royal Children’s Hospital) located in Melbourne has also explained Chroming in a series of guidelines shared on their website. Scroll down to read what the Royal Children’s Hospital had to say.
The RCH stated that the Chroming trend includes the risk of tachycardia, which is used for high heart rates. It also varies levels of central nervous system depression, or central nervous system depression, which occurs when a substance slows down brain activity. It also causes some side effects like slurred speech, hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. The effect of inhaling metal pants or aerosols is short-lived, but may cause heart attack, coma, permanent damage to organs such as the kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, and brain, seizures, or suffocation. The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne also listed petroleum products, thinners, nail polish removers, hairspray and lighter fluid commonly used as sources of chrome plating. Children should be kept out of the reach of these substances. Inhalation of these substances can cause organ damage and seizures. Children can inhale chemicals by soaking them in a cloth and placing them in a plastic container bag before inhaling. After Haynes’ death, the Victorian Department of Education said it would increase efforts to provide children with more information about chrome plating and its deadly effects.
