One Wicked the movie is just not enough!
While the audience is already traveling to the Land of Oz with the release Wicked: Part One On November 22, they will have to wait a year to witness the ending of Elphaba and Glinda’s stories. In April 2022, director Jon M. Chu announced on Xu (formerly Twitter) that the film adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical — which was an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book — would Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West — would be divided into two parts.
“As we’ve been preparing this production over the past year, it’s become increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into one film without doing it some real damage,” Crazy rich Asians the director wrote, noting that damages would include cutting songs or shortening characters.
“So we decided to give ourselves a bigger screen and make not just one BAD movie but TWO!!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED the way it was meant to be told, while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters,” he wrote.

Screenwriter Winnie Holzman told ScreenRant in November 2024 that there had been “long conversations” between her, Chu, composer Stephen Schwartz and producer Marc Platt about whether or not to part ways Wicked in two parts. In the end, everyone agreed that “it’s too much story for one movie”.
“We wanted to have fun, and the whole artistic fulfillment of being able to make these movies was being able to explore our story and our characters with a little more depth,” Holzman said. “As we do it, it adds up. And nobody wanted to cut any songs — actually, we wanted to add songs.”
This decision means that Wicked it also follows the two-part score of the original Broadway production. Just as the song “Defying Gravity” closes the curtain on the first act on stage, it also marks the end of the first film. Schwartz said that iconic number was also part of the decision to split the film into two parts.
“It was very difficult for us to get through ‘Defying Gravity’ without a break,” the composer told a fan newsletter called The Schwartz Scene 2022. “That song was written specifically to bring down the curtain, and whatever scene follows it without a break just made it extremely anticlimactic.”
What is Wicked: Part Two about?

Wicked it is expected to follow a similar plot structure to the Broadway musical. First Wicked the film is a prequel to the 1939 Judy Garland film The Wizard of Oz, while the second shows the same events from the movie, but from Elphaba’s perspective.
“The first tells how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West,” Marc Platt wrote in the production notes, “and the second tells how her best friend, Glinda, becomes authentically good.”
In a November 2024 interview with ScreenRant, Chu teased the potential The Wizard of Oz included protagonist Dorothy Gale Wicked: Part Two.
“In Movie 1, it was important to let Dorothy be who you want her to be. I didn’t want to fit in your pictures of whatever version of Dorothy you wanted her to be,” the director said. “But the presence is important because she plays a significant role in what’s going to happen and how they intersect… But you’ll have to see the second movie to know how far we’re going with her.”

Still Deadline confirmed in June 2023 that Erivo and Grande will return to their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, just a few details on the rest Wicked: Part Two the cast has been announced.
Both movies were shot at the same time, so there’s a good chance the cast will Wicked — including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum and Marissa Bode — will appear in the second film as well as their characters in Act 2 of the Broadway musical.

Shooting a two-part live adaptation of the film Wicked wrapped in January 2024. Erivo confirmed the news on Instagram with a photo of her silhouette in Elphaba’s costume hanging from wires in the air.
“I’ve been trying to figure out what to say when this day finally comes,” the actress wrote in the description. “THIS moment, this film, these people, this cast, this crew, this director, my Glinda, were the greatest gift I could have ever asked for, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to bring you this Elphie.”
She continued, “I hope that when you meet her, you’ll love her as fiercely as I do. And with that I say, that’s the finish for me, Elphie out!! 💚💚💚.”
