When Will Kate Middleton and Prince William Return to Royal Duty? (Hint: It’s Coming Soon!)

Kate Middleton and Prince William are likely soaking up the last bits of summer before getting back to their royal duties.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 41, have been largely out of the public eye in recent weeks as they spend the summer break with their three children: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five. they’ll be back on duty soon — and it’s usually timed around their children’s schedules.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will start the new year at Lambrook School on Wednesday 6 September. The trio started school together last year, wearing identical uniforms as they went with their parents to inspection day for new students.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte previously attended Thomas’s Battersea, not far from the family home of Kensington Palace in London. Meanwhile, Prince Louis is enrolled at Willcocks Nursery School. However, the family’s move to Windsor meant a change — and for the first time, all three children were together in the same school.

Prince William and Princess Kate are likely to return to royal duties shortly after the children settle into the new school year. The couple usually end their summer in September and plan their breaks from royal work throughout the year around the children’s school schedules – regularly driving George, Charlotte and Louis to school and making sure they are home most evenings for their return.

“Those kids seem pretty happy with life,” a palace insider told PEOPLE. “A lot of it comes from the stabilizing normalcy that Kate brings – and that’s how she grew up. William absolutely loves it.”

Despite their royal roles – particularly George, who is second in line to the throne behind his father and will one day become king – Kate is keen to ensure that her children’s childhoods are as normal as possible.

“Since she comes from a different background, she appreciates the importance of spending time with family,” said a source close to the royal household. “She wasn’t brought up in that aristocratic environment where you see children briefly every day.”

Prince William already has a big work trip on the calendar for next month: He will travel to New York on September 18 and 19 for events, including the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit. The event serves as a build-up to the Earthshot 2023 awards ceremony to be held in Singapore on November 7.

The last public engagement of the Prince and Princess of Wales was in July when they attended the Wimbledon men’s final with Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Kate is a regular at Wimbledon — in addition to playing tennis herself, she is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

During the summer months the family probably spent time at their country house in Norfolk, Anmer Hall. Princess Kate and Prince William have already discussed some of the activities the children enjoy there – from baking and cooking in the kitchen to arts and crafts projects. But probably their favorite thing to do is spend time outdoors.

In the interview for 2020 Happy mom, happy baby podcast, Princess Kate told host Giovanni Fletcher that she’s happiest when “I’m with my family out in the country, and we’re all dirty dirty.”

As well as possible domestic getaways – favorite spots include the Isles of Scilly or the Lake District – Kate and William may have taken their children on holiday abroad. One of the popular destinations for the royal family is the Caribbean island of Mustique, which Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret, called “the only place I can relax”. The Prince and Princess of Wales were also on a family holiday in Jordan, where they posed for their 2021 Christmas card photo.

Balmoral was Queen Elizabeth’s summer retreat during her record-breaking reign where she traditionally spent the month of August. Family and friends gathered at the castle and made the most of the grounds for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, horseback riding and picnicking, past times King Charles is likely to continue.
