Jones was born at St. David’s in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, as the only child of teacher Nest Rowlands and shipbuilder Derek John Jones. He went to Ysgol David Hughes and grew up in the small Welsh speaking town of Llandegfan on Anglesey (high school). Jones joined the choir of Bangor Cathedral at the age of nine and, although he never served as principal chorister, rose to the position of principal soloist within two years.
A member of the church, Hefina Orwig Evans, sent a letter to the publishing house Sain in which she praised Jones’ extraordinary high voice, and the letter was officially signed. Jones won the Cerdd Dant solo competitions for children under 12 at the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1982. Jones rose to prominence with his rendition of “Walking in the Air”, a song from the Channel 4 animated film The Snowman, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. The song reached number five in the UK charts in 1985. Although Jones is usually credited with singing the song featured in the 1982 film, the performance was actually performed by Peter Auty, a chorister from St. Paula.
