Lawrence Dobbins and Mya Grounds gave birth to JK Dobbins on December 17, 1998. Despite being high school sweethearts, they never married. Furthermore, Dobbins’ mother was approximately 18 years old when he was born. JK Dobbins is a running back in the National Football League (NFL) who currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens. He played college football at Ohio State before being selected by the Ravens in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Meet Mya Grounds’ mother JK Dobbins
Dobbins inherited his mother’s strong work ethic. Mya Grounds, although a high school athlete who participated in volleyball and basketball, was unable to participate in varsity athletics due to parental responsibilities. Despite this, she completed her education by enrolling at the University of Houston and graduating with a degree in finance. Now she combines her profession as an accountant for the Tax Administration with the responsibilities of parenting her younger son Kance and other children.
Lawrence Dobbins was the top running back at La Grange High School, where JK thrived. He was also an excellent sprinter in the athletics team. Lawrence’s pace led him to Lincoln University, a Division III HBCU in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the 4,100-meter relay team that came close to winning the 1999 state title. However, he returned to Texas and enrolled at the Blinn Institution, a small institution with a football team.
Despite initially making the football team, he was unable to play and eventually resigned. Lawrence ran into difficulties after football didn’t work out for him. He died of a stroke while in Bartlett State Prison on February 22, 2014, when JK was just 15 years old. In 2012, Lawrence was convicted of theft of property and sentenced to two years in prison.
Taking over his father’s legacy
Despite the difficulties, JK maintained a strong relationship with his father, who expressed his wish that his son not follow in his footsteps. JK and his father enjoyed a close relationship until his father’s unexpected death. JK often stayed with his father and grandparents, CL and Rita, during this period while his mother, Mya, worked or went to school. Coping with the loss of his father was very difficult, but Dobbins was determined not to let the grief derail his aspirations.
Football became a source of pleasure for him and a way to cope with loss. He became a better player than his father and enjoyed football nights as much as his father did during his playing days. The death of Dobbins’ father at an early age pushed him to develop faster than many of his classmates, and every time he carries a football, he carries a piece of his father’s legacy with him.
