Nico Williams recalls his parents’ incredible journey, including beating Ghana and playing a record 203 league games. The athletics club is renowned for its academy and has thrived in this area over the past few decades, generating a wealth of local talent that has shone in the senior team.
Around 85% of their players have progressed through their system and now they have one star who excels for both his club and the Spanish national team. Nico Williams, Inaki’s brother, has excelled for them over the past year and is set to represent Spain at the World Cup.
Who are Maria and Felix Williams, the parents of Nic Williams?
Nico Williams was born in Pamplona, Spain to Ghanaian parents who fled the Liberian Civil War eight years ago. Maria Williams is his mother’s name and Felix Williams is his father’s name. Maria told how they left Ghana and walked through the Sahara without food or water, how they could have been killed and how they hid things in the best possible place.
She also told him how she and Felix were imprisoned, and about the lawyer, whose name she still doesn’t remember, who gave them a lifeline and a way to the place where he was born. It is the place where he wrote his history. His brother Iaki said in 2021 that despite the family’s lack of English, they can still communicate with their relatives in the Twi dialect of the Akan language.
Meet Nic Williams’ brother, Iaki Williams.
Iaki Williams Arthuer, the older brother of Nic Williams, is a forward for the Ghana national team and the La Liga club Athletic Bilbao. He grew up in Athletic Bilbao’s youth ranks and has made more than 350 appearances for the club’s first team, setting the La Liga record for most consecutive appearances with over 240. Williams, a Ghanaian-born Spaniard, made his debut for the Spanish national team in 2016. He decided to represent Ghana internationally in 2022 by participating in the World Cup.
Williams was given the Basque name in memory of a Caritas Internationalis staff member based in Bilbao who helped Williams’ parents when they landed in Spain the year he was born. Williams appeared in the 2017–2018 season of the Amazon Prime television documentary series Six Dreams.
The career of Nic Williams
Williams, a 20-year-old attacking prodigy from the Spanish league, has succeeded for both club and country in his short career. He is regarded for what he provides to his clubs as a dynamic striker with outstanding ball control who can thrive on either flank in the future. Many teams in Europe are interested in Williams’ direct approach and ability to beat a player quickly.
Off the ball, he makes good use of his speed by quickly breaking into small areas and smartly chasing to help his teammates in anticipation of a likely pass. He is praised for his positive attitude and desire to work hard for the team. He is also known for his exceptional ability to regain control of the ball after losing it. Athletic Club coach Ernesto Valverde believes that Williams can improve: “Nico Williams is another in the team and we appreciate him as much as the other players.” We already know that when young individuals are expected to have enormous future potential, their balloons inflate dramatically.
