Prior to their appearance on Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover, Syd and Shea McGee were virtually bankrupt.

Aside from their Netflix program, the pair, who have been happily married for over a decade, owns Studio McGee, an interior design business in Salt Lake City, Utah. They have a lucrative social media profession in addition to refurbishing and restoring multi-million dollar houses, having over 371k followers on their YouTube channel. They share glimpses of their personal life with their children in addition to blogging about their profession. According to Pop Sugar, the duo was originally averse to TV programs following a failed effort by a production firm, forcing them to build their YouTube channel until their Netflix series.

The pair also did not purchase their dream house until 2019, having previously lived in rented properties for the preceding five years. Shea and Syd have no previous expertise in the realm of interior design. Shea was a public relations specialist who got interested in design after completing classes at a community college and working as a freelance designer until they founded their own agency. Studio McGee was founded in 2014. The pair revealed to People that they nearly went bankrupt before their Netflix program. The pair also admitted to having no backup plan.

“We had to sell items to make ends meet. It simply got to the point where everything that wasn’t a necessary had to go.”

Their marriage was significantly damaged as a consequence of their financial situation.

“Money issues may be enough to shatter two people, and adding a new baby to the mix… it was a difficult time. There were many tears shed.”

They had to tighten their belts while Shea put together customers and Syd took over operating the company’s entrepreneurial side. To make ends meet, the couple had to cut down on dining out and finally cancel their cable and gym subscriptions. They chose to return to Utah from California, where they had attended college, met, and fallen in love, a year later, irritated with the financial burden.

“We knew it was less costly, and we were already in a situation where we didn’t have a backup plan.”

In 2014, the pair leased Studio McGee’s first space, grew their clientele, and scored a number of big jobs while documenting the whole process on Instagram. This was the start of their prosperous home restoration adventure. The Dream Home Makeover performers also co-wrote a book called Make Life Beautiful, which will be released in 2020. They have three kids, Margot, Wren, and Ivy.
