During its 11 seasons on the air, it’s no surprise that “Modern Family” has garnered a fair amount of guests. Featured include Nathan Fillion, Kevin Hart, Matthew Broderick, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Mann.
Mann – who fans may know from her comedies such as “The Cable Guy”, which also stars Broderick – appeared in the third season of the hit sitcom with as a character named Katie.
Katie appeared in the episode “Treehouse”. After Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) tells Cam (Eric Stonestreet) that anyone who meets him can tell he’s gay, the latter is determined to prove her boyfriend wrong. While at the bar with Mitch, Cam decides to prove he can act fair and challenges Mitch to pick any woman and he can take her number.
Although Mann had a short role, her role provided a hysterical storyline between Mitch and Cam, especially since Stonestreet exploited both the competitive and dramatic nature of her character.
Mitch pointed to a woman sitting alone at the bar, Katie. Cam approached Katie and talked as if he hadn’t seen her in a while, and she immediately followed suit. Then he said that because he was in a coma he couldn’t remember everyone and asked who he was. Horrified, Cam apologizes, but Katie reveals she was joking and tells him his approach was “the worst choice ever”. Finally, he bought her a drink and returned to his table with her number.
Cam’s pride in winning the bet quickly faded and he felt guilty for raising Katie. He didn’t tell her the truth over the phone, but opened up after inviting her over to his house. However, Katie was not surprised. Just as Mitch suspected, she knew Cam was gay from the moment she met him. She just wanted a gay friend to talk to and watch Julia Roberts movies with, and Cam was happy to do that.
When Mitch returned home – and Cam feared he would gloat – Katie failed to act that he was gay, allowing him to keep his dignity. She kissed Cam passionately. As she leaves, she motions for him to call her, implying that they will remain friends. However, this is Katie’s last time on the show and it’s unknown if she and Cam will hang out together.
