At his school, Adam started playing Australian rules football. He joined the North Ballarat under-18 club when he was 16. After two years, Adam was hired by the Sydney Swans from the Australian Football League. Adam made his debut in 1999, at the age of 19, and won the Rising Star award of the season. Adam lacked consistency while playing multiple positions in 2000 and 2001. Adam was on the verge of being cut from the team in 2002 as his performance regularly deteriorated. However, over time his form got better and he started playing racquet more.
Adam won the Bob Skilton Medal for the first time and was selected by Australia at the end of the season in 2003. In 2009 he was the best player of the entire season. He became the fastest AFL player to play 300 games, breaking the previous record held by Marco Ricciuto by 274 days. Goodes also shared the Brownlow Medal, the league’s highest individual accolade, with Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley and Adelaide’s Mark.
