Mercedes Hall and Larry Hall welcomed Michael Anthony Hall into the world on April 14, 1968. His mother and father, owners of an auto body shop, were also blues-jazz singers. Hall’s parents divorced when he was just six months old. He was their only child. He was born in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He and his mother immigrated to New York after going to the West Coast.
His mother remarried Thomas Chester, a manager in the entertainment industry. Mary Chestaro, his half-sister, was born out of wedlock.
His school was St. Hilda and St. Hugh in New York. He later changed schools to the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan. After finishing high school, he did not enter college.
