Antonio made his professional boxing debut at the age of eight in 1997. He made his debut at Blue Horizon in Philadelphia with a knockout in the second round. Antonio saw flashes of success during his early career, winning 16 fights, 14 by knockout. In Las Vegas in 2000, he defeated Ernesto Mateen by knockout. In the same year, Antonio suffered his first defeat against Eric Harding in Mississippi.
Two years later, Antonio defeated Reggie Johnson, the two-time heavyweight champion of the world. After that, Antonio defended his WBC and IBF light heavyweight titles against Montel Griffin. Antonio won his first world title here. Roy Jones Jr., the king of boxing, was defeated by Antonio Tarver in an exciting fight in 2003. But that was not the end of the story. In 2004, a rematch was scheduled. When Antonio fought against Roy and won, he gained immense popularity and immediately became famous in this city.
He was even approached about appearing on the covers of popular magazines such as Ring and KO. At that point, Antonio became the co-host (of one telecast) of the Friday night finals on ESPN.
Antonio had a bad year in 2004 when the WBC stripped him of his world title because he chose to fight Glenn Johnson rather than a WBC mandatory challenger. The WBA even stripped him of the Super Champion title.
