Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai (born 19 May 1949) is an Afghan politician, educator and economist who served as the fifth President of Afghanistan and the second and last President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from September 2014 until August 2021, when his administration was ousted.

Ashraf Ghani Age and Early Life
Ashraf Ghani was born on May 19, 1949 in Logar province, Afghanistan, to Shah Pesand, a civil servant, and Kawbaba Lodin, a native of Kandahar. He is from the Ahmadzai Pashtun tribe.
He was an exchange student at Lake Oswego High School (LOHS) in Lake Oswego, Oregon during the 1966-1967 school year under the names Ashraf Ahmad and Ashraf Ahmad Zai. The US Field Service sponsored his foreign exchange stay. He was a member of the student council.
In addition to the exchange year, he also completed his high school education in Kabul. He originally planned to study law, but then switched to cultural anthropology. Ghani graduated in 1973 from the American University of Beirut, and then received a government scholarship to attend Columbia University, where Ghani received his master’s degree in 1977.

Career
Ghani co-founded the Institute for Government Effectiveness with Clare Lockhart after dropping out of Kabul University, and he served as its president. The institution proposed a structure in which the state would perform 10 duties to help its residents. This paradigm was addressed by post-conflict transition leaders and managers at a conference sponsored by the UN and the World Bank in September 2005. The concept recommended the use of dual contracts between the international community, a country’s government and its people to organize aid and other initiatives and to develop annual sovereignty index to measure state performance.
In an article on the front page of the Financial Times in late 2006[30], was mentioned as a contender to replace Kofi Annan as United Nations Secretary-General, adding: “I aim to win, through ideas.” Carlos Pascual of the Brookings Institution was also reported, praising Ghani’s “enormous intelligence, skill and potential.”
