Brian Joseph Chesky was born in Niskayuna, New York on August 29, 1981. Deborah is the name of his mother and she is Italian, while his father, Robert H. Chesky, is of Polish descent. Both were social workers. Allison’s older brother is Chesky.
Chesky developed an interest in art as a child, imitating drawings on paintings and designing toys and shoes. He then pursued a career in landscape architecture. In 1991, he enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Chesky graduated with a degree in industrial design in 2004. During college, he played hockey and bodybuilding.

Brian Chesky began his career as an industrial designer and strategist at 3DID Inc in Los Angeles. After that he traveled to San Francisco, where he met Gebbia and shared an apartment. Due to the 2007 Industrial Designers Society of America conference, all hotel rooms in San Francisco were booked.
Chesky and Gebbia decided to rent out their apartment to earn money. They used their entrepreneurial skills to buy three air mattresses and market the concept as Airbed and Breakfast, with three renters staying the first night. Due to its attractiveness and uniqueness, this concept has reached conferences and festivals across the United States, forcing renters to submit their rooms online.
Chesky and Gebbia collaborated to create Obama O’s and Cap’n McCain’s cereals, which were themed around the American president. In 2008, they decided to run it simultaneously at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
Chesky, Gebbia and Airbnb’s new co-founder, Nathan Blecharczyk, began charging each booking above 15% in 2009, with the host paying 3 percent and the guest the remaining 12 percent.
In 2014, Chesky delegated all of Airbnb’s day-to-day operations to Blecharczyk, while he remains the company’s CEO. He looks forward to “planning Airbnb’s next move” and transforming the company into a full-fledged travel company. Airbnb had a valuation of $20 billion by 2015.
