Who Is Bubba Watson's Wife? All About Angie Watson

Bubba Watson and his wife Angie have been together for over two decades and their love is stronger than ever.

The couple has come a long way since they first met as student athletes at the University of Georgia in the early 2000s. At the time, Bubba was playing for the school’s golf team, while Angie was hoping to parlay her college basketball career into WNBA dreams. It took Bubba over a year to work up the courage to ask Angie out – and by then she’d already graduated and was playing with Charlotte Sting.

“I met my wife, Angie — the best thing that ever happened to me on or off the golf course. Until then, I had never been in love with anything other than a golf club,” Bubba wrote in an article for Guideposts. “Angie taught me what it’s like to love another human being with all your heart. She also taught me what it means to love the Lord.”

On their first date, Bubba and Angie played a round of golf and knew from the start that their relationship would be serious. By the second date, Angie opened up about her struggle with infertility, and Bubba suggested that the couple adopt a child in the future. The couple married in 2004 and shortly thereafter began the process of expanding their family through adoption.

Although it was an emotional and difficult journey, the couple finally welcomed their son, Caleb, in 2012 — just weeks before Bubba won the Masters. They completed the family by adopting their daughter Dakota two years later.

Looking back, Angie admits her college basketball experience was challenging, but it helped prepare her for the future.

“I think Coach Landers’ coaching style was focused on developing players for their future careers, whether in basketball or any other way,” she said. “When I played at Georgia, I never understood why he was so demanding all the time, but after he coached me, now I know I can handle anything thrown my way.”

After graduating from college, Angie set her sights on the WNBA, but an ankle injury prevented her from reaching the league. Instead, she started playing professionally in Italy. Although she says that learning a new language and living alone was difficult at times, she “matured a lot there” and considers it a great experience.

In 2001, Anglie returned to the USA, where she realized her dream and played in the WNBA league. She signed a contract with the Charlotte Sting and played for one season. Unfortunately, she was injured for most of her time with the team and eventually retired from the WNBA when the season ended. She played internationally again until 2003, and later signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Rockers, but did not make the final roster.

“I’m proud that I was able to embrace my short-lived WNBA career and move forward,” she said in a University of Georgia profile. “I believe I would still be playing professionally if it weren’t for my injuries, so I’m just thankful that I overcame it and could accept my place in life right now.”

While Angie attended UGA, Bubba was also in school playing for the varsity golf team. When the couple’s paths first crossed, they didn’t immediately form a romantic relationship because Bubba says he didn’t have the courage to make the first move. Instead, Angie graduated and Bubba admired her from afar for over a year.

In 2001, while playing with the Charlotte Sting, Angie returned to campus to rehabilitate a knee injury. She ended up running into Bubba while playing a basketball game with her old teammates. A few weeks later, the couple met again while they were both playing golf. This time Bubba made a move and they set a date to play a round together.

“Our first date was a round of golf, but obviously in the pro golf world, playing golf isn’t a date. But I think spending four hours on the golf course with someone you just met and you’re attracted to in my book is a date,” Angie said. later Athens Banner-Herald.

Since then, the couple has marked their anniversary together in sweet ways. In honor of 10 years of marriage, Bubba tattooed Angie’s name on his ring finger. Then, on their 17th anniversary, the pair posed in front of the 17th hole at the Solheim Cup, where Bubba was competing.

“This is a look back at 17… 17 years of marriage, that is! I am so blessed to share such great experiences with my amazing wife. I love you, Angie!! Thanks for being the best wife, mom and friend I could ever have.” Bubba wrote on Instagram.

From the beginning of their relationship, Angie knew that she would not be able to bear children. As she explained to Athens Banner-Heraldshe told Bubba on their first or second date because she knew they were at an age where their relationship could be serious.

“We were at that point in our lives where you start dating, you don’t date just to date,” Angie said. “We’ve had these conversations about what we think our future entails so I shared that with him.”

In response to Angie’s confession, Bubba replied, “That’s fine. If God tells us he wants us to adopt, we will.”

A few years into their marriage, the couple decided to begin the adoption process, which turned out to be an emotional journey.

“We didn’t get our yes … until the fourth time. There were three birth mothers who didn’t choose us,” Angie told Fox News. “During that time, you start asking yourself if God’s plan is for us to be parents, or if I’m not even fit to be a mom, and why these birth mothers don’t think I’d be the right mom for their children.”

After being rejected several times, in 2012 Bubba and Angie were finally approved to become parents to a one-month-old boy they named Caleb. Then, two years later, they were also able to adopt their daughter, Dakota. Looking back, the couple now say “God’s timing was perfect” and want to encourage other families to consider adoption.

“Looking back, we know that God chose these two perfect children for our family and that everything worked out. But seeing it, at the end of what you’re going through, is sometimes hard to see,” Angie explained. “It’s the hardest thing we’ve ever been through as a couple, but it’s also been the greatest thing we’ve ever been through.”

In 2021, Angie signed on as the head girls’ basketball coach at East Hill Christian School in Pensacola, Florida. It marked her return to coaching after a brief stint as an assistant coach at Shorter University in 2003. Now a high school coach, Angie says she’s excited about the opportunity to rebuild the program.

“I don’t take the title of coach lightly. I never intended to become a leader who measured my success by the number of wins and losses. Winning and losing are a byproduct of what we do day in and day out in the classroom, in the community, in the locker room and on the basketball court. My goal for the team is to push them harder than they believe they ever thought they could push. When we push that hard, the results in life are overwhelming,” Angie said on East Hill Christian’s website.

Over the years, Bubba has struggled with severe anxiety, but Angie has stood by him every step of the way.

In his book Up and down, Bubba detailed how he hit “rock bottom” in 2017 after what he called “years and years of bulking up.” During his career, negative comments in the press and on social networks greatly affected his mental health. However, opening up to Angie helped him realize how holding on to anxiety and stress was affecting his physical health.

As he contemplated retiring from golf, Angie encouraged him to return to the game he loved.

“I was planning to take four months off to decide what to do next,” Bubba explained during an interview with Megyn Kelly. “But Angie basically told me to stop whining and do my best. She’s a lot tougher than I am. I cut myself on paper and I’m out for a week or two. But she wasn’t going to let me sit around looking for damage. She told me to focus to the wrong things. She knew I’d rather play golf than be stuck behind a desk or a counter. And when I got well again, I took her advice!”
