Cary Grant Biography
Cary Grant, full name Archibald Alec Leach, was born on January 18, 1904, in Horfield, Bristol, England, to parents Elias James Leach and Elsie Maria Leach. His father used to work in a clothing factory, pressing clothes, and his mother used to sew for a living. He had an older brother, but he died of tuberculous meningitis less than a year after he was born.
His father was an alcoholic, and his mother suffered from clinical depression, so he had a difficult childhood. His father committed his mother to Glenside Hospital, a mental institution when he was nine years old. He later informed him of his mother’s death. Grant and his father relocated to Grant’s grandmother’s house in Bristol.
His father remarried when he was only ten years old. Cary didn’t find out his mother was still alive until he was 31. His father only told him about it a few days before he died. He took the necessary steps to get his mother out of the hospital in June 1935, after learning of her existence.
In terms of education and career, he began working in theater around 1914. Jesse Lasky, a Broadway producer at the time, was drawn to his performance at Berlin’s Wintergarden theatre. Cary Grant won a scholarship to the Fairfield Grammar School in Bristol in 1915.
Even at this point, he worked backstage in Bristol Theatres in the evenings. He was expelled from school on March 13, 1918, due to his behavior. Upon his release, he rejoined the “Bob Pender Stage Troupe,” with whom he had previously trained as a stilt walker and toured.
