Damien Sayre Chazelle was born on January 19, 1985 in Providence, Rhode Island, United States, in a Catholic family. Bernard Chazelle, his father, was born in the French town of Clamart. Celia was his mother’s name. She is of Canadian-English descent from Calgary, Alberta, and previously taught medieval history at the College of New Jersey.
Damien was born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey. He attended Hebrew school for four years because his parents did not want him to attend any other school. Damien grew up with his sister Anna, who became an actress. Their maternal grandfather, John Martin, was the son of then-famous stage actress Eileen Earle. He shared a room in the Currier House while attending Harvard. They were the true founders of the band Chester French, who was discovered during his freshman year of college.
