David Michael Burtka was born in Dearborn, Michigan on May 29, 1975 to Daniel Burtka and Deborah A. Zajas. The actor grew up in Canton, Michigan. Salem High School awarded him his high school diploma in 1993.
He later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Burtka also studied acting at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. He also attended Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Pasadena to train as a professional chef.
