David Karp is an American web developer and entrepreneur who co-founded the microblogging site Tumblr. Karp grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side as the older of two sons born to a teacher and a composer.
He took an early interest in technology and programming, teaching himself HTML at the age of 11. When he was 15, he dropped out of the prestigious Bronx Science High School and was homeschooled by his mother to intern at Frederator Studios. This animation company has done much of its work online.

Biography of David Karp
David Karp was born in New York on July 6, 1986, and grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. His mother was a science teacher from San Anselmo, California named Barbara Ackerman. Michael D. Karp, his father, was a film and television composer. David also has a younger brother, Kevin, and his parents divorced when he was 17 years old. He started learning HTML at the age of eight and then started designing websites for companies.
He also attended the Bronx High School of Science for just one year before dropping out at age 15 and being homeschooled. Later, he thought about attending MIT or college in New York, never going back to high school, never getting a high school diploma.

His first technical position was at UrbanBaby. There, he was invited to complete a project that was due in two days. David finished the project in four hours because he was very talented. UrbanBaby’s founder then made him head of the company’s product and gave him some equity. At the age of 17, he moved to Tokyo for five months.
When UrbanBaby was sold to CNET in 2006, he left the company to start his own software consulting firm with the proceeds from the sale of his stock. Davisville was the name of the company at the time. Marco Arment later joined the company after responding to David’s craigslist ad.
Later, in February 2007, they launched their platform, Tumblr, which gained over 75,000 users in just two weeks. Davisville was renamed Tumblr Inc. in 2007, and the company’s stock was subsequently sold to investors. They sold about 25% of the shares.
Tumblr was later acquired by Yahoo! for approximately $1.1 billion on May 20, 2013. In 2017, Tumblr hosted 375.4 million blogs, and in the same year, David announced that he would be leaving Tumblr at the end of the year.
He also joined Planned Parenthood’s Board of Directors in 2014 and endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in 2016.
