Before accepting a job at Singer and Friedlander in 1954, he had a hard time passing interviews because many employers embarrassed him. He worked as a clerk at his post until 1956, when he moved to New York to work as an arbitrage trader for FM Mayer until 1959. He moved to Wertheim & Co, where he worked as an analyst.
Between 1963 and 1969, George was vice president at Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder, where he invested heavily, increasing the company’s profits. He founded Soros Fund Management in 1970 and became its CEO; before that, he founded another company the previous year, which made it difficult for him to manage both. After renaming one of his funds as ‘Quantum Fund’, the companies continued to grow, earning him a lot and increasing his net worth.
As a businessman and investor, he was involved in other ventures such as the pound short in 1992, which involved fumigating the pound for months, and the Société Générale insider trade in 1988, in which the owner approached him to buy shares. Earlier this year, he launched the Stop Operation Soros campaign in Macedonia, which seeks to provide feedback on how he operates on a global scale.
