Grandmaster Flash Biography

Joseph Saddle was born on January 1, 1958 in Bridgetown, Barbados. His parents later immigrated to the United States from Barbados. Grandmaster grew up in the Bronx, New York and attended Samuel Gompers High School, a public vocational school, where he learned how to repair electronics. His father was a fan of Caribbean and African-American records, and both father and mother influenced his taste in music.

As a child, the grandmaster was fascinated by his father’s record collection and he admitted that he had trouble hitting the record. After graduating from high school, Grandmaster entered New York’s earliest DJ circles by attending parties hosted by DJ Kool Herc.
