He played football in Florence, went to the Lazio hot springs, and performed on stage in a nightclub in Capri. Sadly, his wife Catherine had to withdraw, thus he had to participate in every activity alone.

He responded, “That was part of the idea, potentially to be on camera, but possibly not when asked if Catherine had gone with him. In contrast to her husband, she is actually rather a reserved, shy person.

“I went there for my 40th birthday and it was just beautiful; we were on the Amalfi Coast. He explained his inspiration for the thoughtful act by saying, “I was trying to build her into it a little bit by sending pictures as it’s a place we both know so well.”

The 1992 London launch of a book about Swiss cheeses was when the Mastermind presenter first met his wife, who was employed in publishing at the time.

They were married at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Covent Garden, where he claimed it was love at first sight for him.

After returning to the UK for their big day, they took a flight back to the United States before spending their honeymoon on Venezuela’s Maracaibo coast because Clive had recently been appointed the BBC’s LA correspondent.
